Wargentin
Location: ·
The famous 'plateau crater' — filled with lava to its very rim, like an overfull dish.
Type
Crater
Diameter
85 km
Position
49.5°S 60.4°W
Name approved
1935
The lava rose inside the crater until it overran the lowest point of the rim, and then stopped. The rim stands only about 0.3 km above the surrounding terrain, and wrinkle ridges on the plateau radiate from its centre. Ejecta settled on the surface afterwards, which is why it is brighter than most basalt.
