Mare Vaporum
Location: ·
The 'Sea of Vapors' — a small lava plain at the Moon's very heart, hemmed in by rilles.
Vaporum lies between the Imbrium and Serenitatis rims, inside a ring of the Procellarum structure, and the ground around it carries some of the most extensive dark mantling on the near side. The deposits at Rima Bode to its west and Sulpicius Gallus to its northeast are pyroclastic: beads of volcanic glass erupted in fire fountains and spread over the surrounding terrain.
Those beads matter out of proportion to their volume. They quenched too fast to lose their volatiles, so they are the least altered sample of the lunar interior available, and the water found in them is the main evidence that the mantle was not dry.
