Mare Serenitatis
Location: ·
The 'Sea of Serenity' — Apollo 17, the last crewed mission, landed on its eastern rim.
Serenitatis is compositionally zoned. The basalts at the margins are older and richer in titanium, those in the centre younger and low in titanium, and the difference is visible as a colour boundary in processed images - the mare filled in episodes over several hundred million years rather than in one flood.
Dorsa Smirnov and the other wrinkle ridges arcing around the interior trace the buried rim of the inner basin, where the fill settled over the older topography. The basin carries a strong mascon, and Apollo 17 landed on its southeastern edge in 1972.
