Mare Nubium
Location: ·
The 'Sea of Clouds' — an ancient lava plain in a basin so old its original rim has all but vanished.

Mare
Diameter
714 km
Position

The Nubium basin is old and barely traceable. There is no continuous rim, no mountain ring, and the outline is inferred mostly from the arrangement of the mare and a few arcs of ridge, which is what a pre-Nectarian basin looks like after everything younger has been laid on top of it.
Ranger 7 was aimed into Mare Nubium in July 1964 and returned the first close-up images of the lunar surface, more than 4,300 of them in the final minutes, resolving detail a thousand times finer than any telescope.
