Frigoris is the one large near-side mare that does not sit in an impact basin. It is an irregular strip more than 1,400 km long lying along an outer ring of the Procellarum structure, filled where the crust happened to be low rather than where a basin had been excavated.

It follows that it has no mascon. The circular maria all carry a mass excess from mantle uplift beneath the basin; Frigoris, having no basin, carries essentially none, which is the cleanest available test of where mascons come from.
