Longomontanus is one of the largest craters of Nectarian age. Its wall is so worn that the rim is nearly level with the surrounding terrain, and the northern rim is crowded with overlapping craterlets. The floor is fairly flat, with a low cluster of central peaks offset to the west. It lies southwest of Tycho, with Clavius to the southeast.
