Grimaldi
Location: ·
A basin older than Imbrium whose inky lava floor is the darkest large patch on the nearside.
Grimaldi's floor has one of the lowest albedos on the Moon, near 0.05, which is why it is easy to pick out against the bright limb highlands even when the libration is poor.
It also carries one of the stronger isolated crustal magnetic anomalies on the near side. Most such anomalies are marked at the surface by lunar swirls, bright sinuous patterns where the field deflects the solar wind and slows weathering; Grimaldi has the anomaly without the swirl, which is part of why the connection between the two is still unsettled.
