Archimedes
Location: ·
The largest crater on Mare Imbrium — flooded by lava, so its smooth floor hides no central peak.

Archimedes is 81 km across with a floor of smooth basalt and no central peak, and that combination brackets its age. It cuts into terrain excavated by the Imbrium impact, so it is younger than the basin; its floor is flooded by the mare, so it is older than the lava. It formed in the interval between the two.
The flooding is deep enough to have buried whatever central structure existed. Only the rim and its outer ramparts stand above the fill.
